Why RAM Remote Programming Is Different From Other Vehicles
RAM trucks use the Stellantis group’s secure access architecture — the same platform as Jeep and Chrysler but with truck-specific configurations. The remote communicates with the vehicle’s Body Control Module (BCM) and the immobiliser system simultaneously. A replacement or duplicate remote has to be accepted by both modules before it will operate the locks or allow the engine to start.
This is why a remote that physically looks identical to your original — same shape, same buttons — may not work if it has been programmed for a different vehicle or has not been coded to your specific BCM. Generic remotes bought online and self-programmed using basic instructions will often pair with the door locks but fail to complete the immobiliser handshake, leaving the vehicle unable to start.

Duplication vs. Replacement — What You Actually Need
These are two different situations with different processes.
Remote Duplication — You Still Have the Original
If your original remote works but you want a spare — for a family member, a second driver, or backup — duplication starts with your working original. The existing remote’s code is read and the encryption state is extracted. A new blank fob with the correct frequency and transponder type for your RAM model is then cut and programmed to match. Both remotes then operate the vehicle simultaneously.
RAM models from 2015 onwards use a 433MHz rolling-code system. Older models may use a fixed-code 315MHz system. The blank fob must match the correct frequency and transponder chip type — fitting the wrong blank produces a remote that appears to work but will drop out or fail intermittently under the rolling-code refresh cycle.
Remote Replacement — Original Lost or Damaged
When the original remote is lost or no longer functional, the process is more involved. Without an existing working remote to read from, the BCM has to be accessed directly through the diagnostic port to extract the current security token. A new remote is then programmed against this token.
In some cases — particularly if the vehicle has been through a BCM update or a battery disconnect event — the security token needs to be re-initialised before a new remote can be accepted. This is a dealership-level procedure that requires the same diagnostic software we carry. It cannot be done with a standard OBD scanner or a basic key programmer.

Button contact failure: The rubber contact pads under the buttons wear out on high-use remotes, particularly the lock and unlock buttons. The remote’s electronics are fine but the button press is not registering. The fob shell and contact pad can be replaced while keeping the original circuit board and transponder chip, which preserves the programming and avoids a full reprogramming job.
Water damage: RAM remotes are not waterproof. A remote that has been dropped in water or left in a pocket through a wash cycle often has corroded circuit board contacts. Depending on the extent of the corrosion, the board may be recoverable or may need the transponder chip transferred to a new housing. We assess this before recommending replacement.
BCM desync after battery disconnect: Disconnecting the vehicle battery — for maintenance or after a complete discharge — sometimes breaks the pairing between the remote and the BCM, particularly on 2018 and earlier RAM models. The vehicle starts with the key but the remote stops functioning. A re-pairing procedure through the diagnostic port restores the link without needing a new remote.

This points to an incomplete immobiliser pairing rather than a locking system fault. The BCM has accepted the remote for door access but has not completed the transponder handshake required for the engine immobiliser to release. This is common when a remote has been programmed using basic equipment that only addresses the locking system. A full BCM-level programming session completes both pairings simultaneously.
Can I programme a RAM remote myself using YouTube instructions?
The self-programming procedure that works on some older RAM models — a specific sequence of door open/close and ignition cycles — only works on vehicles that still have the manual learning mode enabled, which RAM discontinued on most models after 2013. Newer models require diagnostic software access to the BCM. Attempting the manual sequence on a newer model does nothing. If you have tried it already and the remote is not working, no damage has been done — the vehicle simply did not respond to the sequence.
I have two RAM trucks and want to carry one spare remote that works on both — is that possible?
No. Each remote is paired to one specific vehicle’s BCM through a unique security token. A remote cannot be programmed to work across multiple vehicles simultaneously. You would need separate remotes for each truck.
